The Technology Edge With Prolight Opto Technology

Enerdyne's core focus has always been to represent manufacturers who are known world-wide for product innovation and who are setting global standards in technology.

Prolight Opto Technology from Taiwan is one such important company in the field of Power LED that despite being a relative newcomer - being founded in October 2004 - has plenty of achievements to show in development of unique and patented technologies for managing the thermal levels inside the LED packages that prolong LED lifespan.

One patented technology developed by Prolight is a dual-conductor copper element divided by a thermal transfer strip. The notable feature of this element is its uni-body copper structure that eliminates the need of an additional heat sink. The ingenious structure is patented both in Taiwan and the United States. Typically, heat-sink and the electrodes are built on different pieces.

Superior Metal

Although many packagers still use aluminium substrate for heat-sinks, Prolight maintains that copper is superior to aluminium and even ceramic in thermal conductivity.

Soldering further helps boost conductivity of emitters from Prolight, since the company solders the emitters' electrode pins to circuit boards, instead of using thermal conductive adhesive.

Backed by efficient thermal dissipation techniques, the company is able to achieve excellent luminous durability - its 1 Watt emitter fed 250mA was field tested at 91.06% brightness after 10,000 hours of non-stop operation Superior encapsulation material Prolight also encapsulates LED chips with optic grade silicone - a technological edge - while many others still use epoxy resin. Silicone is superior to epoxy in transparency and resilience, as well as heat and ultraviolet resistance. The company field tested its typical high power emitter LED at 80% of light output after 16,000 hours of continuous operation, compared with a 5mm epoxy white LEDs 20% of output.

While silicon costs around US$500 - 700 a kilogram vs US$ 3 -7 for epoxy, the company bears the extra cost, for it believes in competing on quality, not price.

Another patent has been won by Prolight for its unique packaging process that evenly spreads phosphor powder over LED chip, hence enabling the LED to emit light of consistent wavelength.

The phosphor powders used by Prolight do not infringe any patents. Another patent won by the company relates to static-resistance technology. Since inception, Prolight have focussed on developing in house technologies, leading to several patents on structure and electrical circuit design as well as illumination quality and we at Enerdyne are delighted to partner with Prolight since it gives us the opportunity to bring the results of such cutting-edge technology to all our customers for power LEDs in India.
